May- Luna-tic's

The winter is well and truly amongst us as the weather is colder and wetter and days getting shorter and shorter. Still the odd day that reaches 20 degrees or so but less often these days. On the bright side it keeps the sharks away! Overall it has been a relatively quiet month as we save a bit of dosh for the arrival of Kieran ‘Chancer’ Costello and our travels north to Brisbane, Surfers and Fraser Island at the end of June. However we still have a few incidents and news to report. Never a dull moment in the life of a musketeer!!!

One fine day we ventured into Sydney city to see what the craic was as we weren’t in there for ages together. We walked to the Junction and got the train into town and disembarked at Martins Place. The city was actually pretty quiet until we came to The Rocks which was thronged with people hustling and bustling around the market stalls set up. The Rocks is a very nice part of Sydney, its really old style Sydney and has a cool bohemian atmosphere and European style to it. Conor really loves it! After The Rocks we headed to Circular Quay which is home to the Sydney Opera House. After much posing for pictures we began our walk towards the world famous Harbour Bridge which was opened in 1932 and is affectionately known as the ‘coat hanger’. Funny looking coat hanger if you ask me!!! We walked across the bridge which was wonderfull, Mike was enthralled by the views! Awesome views across Sydney Harbour and the Opera House captivated Mike and persuaded to state “Isn’t it only beautiful”!

On the other side of Harbour Bridge, we went to Luna Park. This is a carnival type amusement place. Basically a fancy version of the amusements down in Salthill without the knackers going around (Waltzer’s)! Luna Park is famous for its entrance giant clown face which is an iconic image here in Sydney and its stunning location beside the harbour waters and Harbour Bridge. Luna was free in which is great, however you have to buy combo passes for rides after, you cant just pay for one or two rides. The place reminded me of the episode of the Simpsons when the ‘carnys’ come to town. Anyways we took some funny snaps and played some of carny games. There was one particular game in which you had to throw a ball into a bucket about a metre away, I taught was easy peesy, I got 3 balls to throw. I threw each ball in the bucket only to see it bounce straight back out! I was had, by a carny and Mike and Gary followed me. The carny laughed at us with our money in his hand, he gave us a kangaroo teddy as he felt sorry for us which I believe little Jennifer Ryan now owns. Upon exiting Luna Park we saw the taxi boats in the water and immediately found our shortcut back across the harbour. $5 each got us a ride on the taxi boat under Harbour Bridge, it was class and Conor really loved it. We were only on it for about 5mins but still enjoyed it. Before we went for the train a pint in the Opera Bar was had which is regarded as the best Beer Garden in the World, located superbly outside the Opera House and facing the Harbour Bridge. A good way to round up another adventure for the musketeer’s.

One for all and all for one,

Tom

This month saw Mr Michael Ryan turn the grand old age of 12…..I mean 22…only messing Mike. With this we decided to hit the town with the A team…unfortunately they weren’t around for a reunion so Dani, Joe, Ronan, Charlie and Dee had to do….I’m full of insults today so I am!!! We started the Birthday drinking in our Bondi mansion before heading off into town. Our taxi brought us outside the Opera house and its a beautiful sight during the middle of the night….we were after more beautiful sights in the Argyle, which is a club (in the shape of a castle) situated in the classy Rocks. We all said Happy Birthday to Mike and with it being Dee’s last week in Sydney we went wild for the night. Once the club was closed we decided…or rather Dani….decided that we should all go for Pancakes! Pancakes you say? Yes, instead of the usual gathering spot of Supermac’s after a night in Halo or CP’s and looking at hungover people with the ridiculous bright lights in Supermacs…we dined (shows how classy we have got since coming to Australia) in a Pancake restaurant ( PS this is to be the best of my recollection) filled with all the pancakes man could want to eat. Most of us had the chocolate ones with Mike having the “Strawberry patch” and the Charlie (showing his true Mayo colours”) having the “farmer’s brunch”…which looked like something a rabbit would eat. Mike raved about his pancake and I for one will try it on our next night out!

One sunny Saturday we headed into the Harbour to meet Mark, our Man Utd buddy, to have a free all you can eat buffet in Star City. Prior to dining there, we walked past a street performer who had a bit of a crowd gathering. Mike and I walked past him…fully knowing that he would poke fun at us. He shouted “it’s ok to hold hands if you want to” so with this…..we gave him exactly what he wanted. Mike and I held hands and much to my surprise Mike started skipping!!!! The crowd were in stitches…they probably found this funnier than the street performer. With that gay little moment we met Mark and waited outside Star City to fill our bellies!! The queue was a mile long but thanks to Mark’s connections we were luckily allowed to skip the queue. They had so a variety of food’s in there and no one would go home hungry. It costs $40 when you actually pay and in our opinion it’s well worth it.

Congrats to Damien and Kim on the birth of their daughter Jennifer Ryan.

Until next time,

Gary
